Thursday in Passau and on the Inn River

Thursday, June 30th, Passau and River cruise up the Inn River to Scharding, Bavaria

I find that I can postphotos easier on Facebook but details have to come from the blog.

Passau is a border town at the confluence of three rivers, the Danube, the Inn and Ilz.  It is in Austria but borders on the Czech Republic and Bavaria in Germany.  (The Bavarians believe they are a different country)

Our day was full of walking today as we docked on the tip of the old town and were met at the ship by our local guide.  The town has cobbled streets and sidewalks, so one had to be careful when walking.

We visited the town hall and heard the Passau version of the Nibelung Legend of Siegfried who defeated Attila the Hun. The town is famous for the gothic cathedral  of St. Stephen with its pipe organ of over 1700 pipes  We were able to her a 30 minute concert that was awe inspiring. I will try to post photos from the cathedral .

In the way back to the ship (another long walk) Peggy and I stopped at a lovely ceramic store. The building was in the lowest floor of a building from 1000 AD. We each made a purchase, but when I returned to the ship, I found that I had put down my camera as I paid.  Therefore I made a forced walk back from pier 1 to pier 9 then up two blocks to the shop. She had not even noticed the camera on her table as she was working on her painting .  I made it back to the ship with 20 minutes for lunch before our 2:00 departure for the Inn Boat cruise

The bus trip through the Bavarian Country side was lovely and the town of Scharding was interesting especially from a photographers point of view. But the highlight was taking a small boat like the boats used 100 years ago up the Inn River and back.  The river is near flood stage and very grey in color.  This is from the chalk deposits up-river.  I must get ready for today’s journey. I shoudl have more time to post this afternoon.

  1. The alter at the Cathedral we visited at Passau was the most unusual. Almost had a contemporary feeling. I liked it very much in contrast to the gold ornate cathedral alters we saw through out the trip.
