Last full day in Egypt January 23, 2019

Written: January 24, 2019. 2:00 am

Dear friends and family,

After a three hour nap, I am finally packed and ready to catch the bus transfer to the airport for my trip back to JFK. This trip has been a once in a lifetime experience, but I know that I will want to come back. Our speaker last night said “Come back, again, again and again.” When I come back I will bring more America $1.00 bills and fewer clothes.

On our last day we visited a Jewish Synagogue, two Coptic Churches, and a Moslem Mosque. At each site we got information on the theology and history of each s community of believers. According to Egyptian tradition, Mary, Joseph and Jesus spent 3 and a half years in Egypt. The first three months in Cairo hiding in a cavern that is now a Coptic Church. A mural of their journey was outside of one churches. An actual tour of each site is planned in the near future.

While we were at this church, several small groups were meeting in the sanctuary studying the Bible. The Coptic Church ‘s literary is memorized and is in the language of Ancient Egypt. Later in the service it is given in Arabic so the audience can understand.

Today was full of activities, We visited the Bazaar, had lunch in a local restaurant and spend about 2 + hours in the Cairo Museum. The museum is in a period of flux as the new museum, Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), is still only partially finished but they are moving items weekly into the finished sections. The one exhibit of the 11th Dynasty models found in the tomb of Meketre by the Metropolitan team headed by Dr. Herbert Winlock had been moved to the GEM within the last month. I’ll have to come back to be able to see this.

I highly recommend Road Scholar for their planning, selection of guides, accommodations and ability to give exceptional value for international travel. I’ve had a great room mate, Audrey, and have been able to meet wonderful senior learners from all over the US. I will definitely do this again!

I will probably write another post or two as I spend time reviewing this experience. I thank you so much for going on this journey with me.

  1. So glad you enjoyed your learning adventure with Road Scholar. It is good to hear your positive comments. We had a similar experience on our Alaska Cruise and I am planning a grandparent trip for this coming summer. Can’t wait to see how that turns out. It seems that they are a top quality organization. Safe travels home.
