Non-Stop Manhattan Adventures

Sunday, February 26, 2023: 6:45 am & 9:00 pm

Report for Friday and Saturday February 24-25, 2023

Friday was a full day for Linda and a busy day for me. Linda met up with Jedidiah and Constance Chia, two of her 14 grandchildren, who were in Manhattan with their Dad, David. Jedidiah, age 18, the ultimate Manhattan planner, had planned the day in detail including subway and walking directions for their special day with Marmee (Linda). Part one began at 9:00 meeting at Grand Central for a 3 hour tour of the Summit One Vanderbilt, “Connection physically to a world with mind bending wonder. Three mind-bending immersive experiences suspended in midair above NYC” (quote form website).

Stop two on the day: I now joined the group at noon for two plus hours of at the Museum of Broadway. Three floors of the entertainment history.

A short walk and subway ride to the FIT Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Then on to supper at the World’s largest Applebees.

With an hour and a half until the next event, we walked down 50th Street to Rockefeller Plaza to watch skaters then on to Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.

The only part of this 14 hour adventure that Jedidiah did not plan, was our play “The Play that Goes Wrong”. The playbill included a discount ticket for the new play by the same play write “Peter Pan that Goes Wrong”. I may need to come back to Manhattan for my birthday at the end of March!

Saturday was our planned day at the Met to see the Egyptian section to prepare for our trip on Monday. We made it through about 1500 years of history so we will finish up this afternoon after Church at Manhattan Church of Christ.

Egypt at the Met on Saturday

Before going back to the Loft, we stopped at the New York City Library for their Precious Treasures exhibit of wonderful artifacts owned by the Library, including a Thomas Jefferson handwritten draft copy of the Declaration of Independence, the draft copy of Washington’s Farewell Address (in Washington’ own hand) and my favorite, the original toys of Winnie-the- Pooh.

Original Winnie-the-Pooh characters.

AA Milne gave his son Christopher, the bear for his first birthday, (1921). Every year Christopher got a new toy, Eeyore, Tigger, etc and his Dad would make up bedtime stories for Christopher. In 1926, AA Milne published the first of these stories and the rest is history.

Sunday plans are to attend Manhattan Church of Christ, finish our tour of the Met then retreat to the Loft to pack for our Egyptian adventure on Monday.

Thanks for following along.
